A Summer of Fun Has Just Begun in Ripley County

Our recent initiative, A Summer of STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, & Mathematics), launched at the beginning of June to provide co-curricular and fun summer programming opportunities to the youth of Ripley County. So far, three summer camps/activities have taken place.

Kids Building Bikes Camp: Through a 12-hour crash course, Ripley County gained 8 new road-safe bike riders. Led by Nine13sports, students constructed their very own bicycle and learned about road safety, the history of a bike, technical bike terminology, and bike maintenance/mechanics. Daily lessons incorporated elements of geometry and engineering to assist students in obtaining a high quality educational experience regarding bicycle mechanics.

On the final day of camp, students went on a bike ride throughout the town of Milan. Bike riders made a special stop at the Milan ‘54 Museum where they were given a personalized tour to learn about the history of the Milan Miracle. A second stop at the local Dairy Queen for a celebratory ice cream treat.

The Science Behind Cooking Camp: A total of 22 students learned how to Bake the World a Better Place during this three-day cooking camp. Through the measurement of ingredients, students made various dishes. Some of these included pancakes, bacon, eggs, smoothies, pizza, and ice cream. Professional Chef David VanArtsdalen, owner of the Hassmer House Tavern + Inn located in Versailles, IN, taught students how to make the restaurant’s delicious macaroni and cheese on the last day of camp.

Each student left camp not only with new found knowledge but with Family Meal Bags. Each Family Meal Bag was filled with all of the ingredients needed for the students to cook every recipe learned at camp in their own kitchens for their friends and family at home to promote bonding. Thank you, Ripley County Court Services JDAI, for providing our new Master Chefs with the resources necessary to apply their new skills to real-world opportunities.

Stargazing with Astronomers: Over 100 people of all ages attended Space Week, which was launched in Ripley County to encourage space education amongst all residents. Held at the Milan Public Library, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery conducted an immersive portable planetarium experience where attendees learned about galaxies all over our solar system, constellations that are present currently in the sky, star movement and navigation, and the number of moons each planet has.

Every attendee left with full hands as they were each gifted a telescope, thanks to a sponsorship from Ripley County Court Services JDAI. This will continue to encourage at home stargazing and provide a continuation for an eagerness to learn about space.
