Summer Newsletter Announcements

What a great summer! Thank you all for joining us for A Summer of STREAM!

Through a wide variety of camp offerings and activities, A Summer of STREAM provided middle school students across Southeastern Indiana with opportunities to have fun while learning skills and knowledge applicable to both their academic pursuits and their daily lives.

DIY Woodworking Camps

On June 1st and 2nd, and later on July 26th and 27th, DIY Woodworking Camps were held in collaboration with Iron Timbers in Osgood, IN. Students were given the opportunity to work with the professional staff at Iron Timbers to build their own charcuterie board or cutting board. From sanding to applying resin, students received an intensive crash course in learning the foundational principles related to woodworking, while cultivating an appreciation for planning and executing a creative project from start to finish!

Kids Building Bikes Camps

Over the course of two sessions, one in June and one in July, Kids Building Bikes Camps were held in collaboration with Nine13sports in Osgood and Batesville, IN. Attendees were given the opportunity to learn from, and work alongside, the staff of Nine13sports to construct their own bicycles from custom kits. From learning about the invention of the bicycle to changing tires and installing parts, campers received comprehensive hands-on instruction regarding the safe operation and proper maintenance of a bicycle. In addition, they were able to ride their bikes after assembly on the last day of camp!

Future Ready Robotics Camps

From June 12th to June 16th, Future Ready Robotics Camps were held at Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School. The camps were open to 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students from across Southeastern Indiana, and held in two stages - one geared toward those with previous robotics experience, and the other toward beginners. In Stage 2, attendees got to heighten their mechanical and programming skills by learning how to build and autonomously program robots designed to compete in formal robotics competitions. In Stage 1, attendees worked in teams to compete in a series of competitions, such as the 2023-2024 VEX IQ Challenge, freeze tag games, and head-to-head battlebots!

Game ON: E-Sports Camp

On June 20th through June 22nd, in teams of four, campers competed in the video game Rocket League at Game ON: E-sports Camp! Rocket League is a computer game that puts a creative spin on sports, combining the elements of soccer with auto racing. Players control vehicles akin to RC cars while attempting to hit a large soccer ball into another team’s net. Camp activities were focused on building teamwork while promoting healthy habits around competition and gaming. The camp was hosted at Milan Middle School. Students from across Southeastern Indiana duked it out on the car-soccer pitch to learn and develop skills in communication, collaboration, strategy, teamwork, and sportsmanship!

Explore Health Services, Public Safety, Welding, and Construction Camps

On the week of June 26th, Explore Career Pathways Camps were held at the Southeastern Career Center, providing attendees with a look at professions in health services, public safety, welding, and building trades! While learning how to operate machinery, perform a dental check-up, and build a birdhouse, students developed skills in high-demand, high-wage professions.

The Science Behind Cooking Camp

The Science Behind Cooking Camp was held in collaboration with the South Ripley Community School Corporation on July 5th through 7th. Students were exposed to different cultures from across the globe through their unique cuisines. With the help of many volunteers, students were given the opportunity to cook foods from the continents of Asia, Europe, and North America, giving them an around the world experience!

Star Wars Camp and Camp Hogwarts

Our Star Wars and Hogwarts themed camps, held in mid-July, exposed campers to learning in a unique environment. At Star Wars, students cultivated skills in collaboration through obstacle courses and games like Capture the Yoda, a combination of capture the flag and flag football. At Hogwarts, from team challenges like Quidditch and the Tri-Wizard Relay Race (themed after events from the books and movies), to classes such as herbology and care for magical creatures (which put a fantasy spin on classical academic subjects like chemistry, art, and biology), students were able to build common classroom skills in a reimagined setting!
