Art In Motion: Recapping Skateboarding Camp
Genesis: Pathways to Success continued A Summer of STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) with Skateboarding Camp hosted at Lawrenceburg Skatepark in partnership with Blacklist Boardshop. Over the course of three days, 10 students learned how to assemble and ride skateboards.
Day 1 of Skateboarding Camp kicked off with a historical background of skateboards and learning the difference between the art of skateboarding versus the sport. Students learned the importance of the physical benefits of skateboarding and how it can teach them neat life lessons. Blacklist Boardshop went over all the different parts of a skateboard, discussing the use of each and how they have evolved over time. Students got to paint and decorate their own decks, using paint, stickers, and grips.
Day 2 continued with review of the different parts of a skateboard and how to assemble the skateboard. Students then built their skateboard as Blacklist Boardshop instructors helped tweak small details to ensure their skateboard was safe for riding. Students learned the correct way to safely ride, using helmets and pads. They began one-on-one breakout sessions to determine stance and ability level. Students spent the remainder of day 2 rotating in stations consisting of assembling wheels, trucks, and applying grip tape.
“My favorite part of camp was getting the chance to skate. I liked meeting people my age who also love skating.” Elijah Davidson, incoming 5th grader at North Dearborn Elementary School.
The last day of Skateboarding Camp was all about riding. Students continued rotating in stations for the morning portion. The afternoon consisted of free riding and collecting goodies like certificates and goody bags.
“This camp is great because it’s hard for kids this age to access skateboarding. This connects them with other kids their age and older who share a similar passion for skating. I have loved seeing their progression throughout. Both the beginners and more advanced riders have all learned how to express themselves through their skating style, while adding to their repertoire of tricks.” Joe Hughes, owner of Blacklist Boardshop.
