Genesis Geared Up for the July Kids Building Bikes Camp
It’s time to stretch those legs, spin those wheels, and get those tools in hand because the July 2022 Kids Building Bikes Camp has just begun. Thanks to Genesis: Pathways to Success and Nine13Sports ,8 kids from all over Ripley County have advanced their road safety skills and bicycle mechanics knowledge.
Caroline Kellerman, Ripley County Community Foundation Marketing Intern, commented, “Seeing Nine13Sports in action teaching the students is something that makes my job so exciting. They’re so interactive and I usually end up leaving each day having learned a thing or two myself.”
The students walked in on day one of camp with limited knowledge on bicycles and left knowing how to fully assemble their own bike. On day 1 of this 4 day, 12 hour crash course students learned about bicycle history and the basics of bike mechanics. The second day of camp was filled with learning bicycle parts terminology, different tools and their uses, as well how to fix a flat tire. Through the use of geometry and other math skills, students were taught in depth steps on the manufacturing process and maintenance of a bicycle on day 3 of camp. With their newly assembled bicycles, the students spent day 4 of camp going on a bike ride throughout Batesville and celebrating a long a week of hard work.
Nine13sports Kids Building Bikes Director, Matty Bennett, described, “Kids now-a-days spend so much time using technology and the best part of my job is getting to see them learn something through hands-on, interactive learning instead of just watching a computer screen.”
The phrase, “You can’t have a rainbow without a little rain,” proved true on the last day of camp as the students prepared to take their bike tour. However, rain or shine, they were determined to push through. The summer showers added an extra educational moment for them to be able to apply their newly learned rider safety skills.
Amy Streator, Ripley County Community Foundation Executive Director, said, “Leading the pack during the bike ride was such a great time, as biking has always been a hobby of mine. It's always great during the Summer of STREAM Camps to see the kids have the test of actually taking what they’ve learned and living it out in their everyday lives.”
The next Kids Building Bikes Camp will be held this fall in September.
